Bite Into Waitresses Buttery Notes

Broadway Theatre League of Utica has opened the doors to Joe’s Dinner and invited everyone to come inside and sample the alluring music Waitress has concocted. Adding a dollop of spice to the sensational 2021-2022 Broadway Utica season, Waitress is ready for its audience to fall in love with the unexpected delights they bake up.

Premiering at the Stanley Theatre on March 22nd and 23rd, Waitress is the adaptation of the 2007 motion picture, written by Adrienne Shelly, that tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. An empowering musical, quick to grab the attention of theatre advocates across the country, Waitress has left viewers diving into the music that Entertainment Weekly called “a slice of heaven.”

As Jenna, the star of the hit musical, pours her heart into her pies, crafting desserts like “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” and “Betrayed By My Eggs Pie,” musical composer Sara Bareilles breaks onto the set with an award-winning soundtrack.

Bareilles first musical to earn a Tony nomination for Best Original Score, Waitress dishes out a distinct pop style that’s full of silky, multi-layered harmonies ready to pull viewers directly into Jenna’s life inside Joe’s Diner. While much of Waitress takes a dynamic left-hand turn in typical Broadway musical styles, its composition proves to be magical. Bareilles’s quick, winding wordplay, creates a fresh, lyrical beat that draws on big emotions. Be prepared for the characters to crush powerful, vocally challenging tunes like, “I Didn’t Plan It,” the light and pretty “A Soft Place to Land,” and the endearing “Take It from an Old Man.” An extra tissue or two might also be required when Jenna launches into the buttery, emotional song, “She Used To Be Mine.”

While the show is guaranteed to pull on heartstrings, Waitress will have audience members rooting for Jenna as she becomes aware of a baking contest in a nearby county.  As the vocals take a fundamental twist, quick to secure the palate of theatre lovers everywhere, the only question on hand will be: Will Jenna’s personal recipe for happiness rewrite her menu for life in the end? Viewers entwined in Waitress’s appetizing tune of life can only wait for Bareilles’s powerful epiphany to see if everything changes in the end.
