BEYOND THE STAGE & MAKING AN IMPACT IN UTICA

April 2, 2024

Broadway Utica is proud to announce its latest endeavor as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the Central New York (CNY) community through its “Beyond the Stage” initiative. This initiative aims to spotlight local non-profits and charities. As Come From Away sweeps through town Broadway Utica is honoring the dedication and sacrifice of our region’s first responders and Food Pantry Drive.

COMMUNITY RECOGNITION
Broadway Utica will also be honoring the invaluable contributions of our region’s first responders. COME FROM AWAY is a beautiful salute to First Responders in health and safety as well as community passion and support. These dedicated individuals play a crucial role in keeping our community safe and secure, often putting their own lives on the line to protect others. Broadway Utica will express gratitude for their service and sacrifice, recognizing the vital role they play in our community.

Nominate a first responder (ex: firefighter, law enforcement officer, paramedic, emergency medical technician, nurse etc.). Must complete the form to qualify. Nomination Form.
“We are thrilled to continue our ‘Beyond the Stage’ initiative, which highlights and honors the bravery and selflessness of our first responders,” said Carrie Klepadlo, Director of Development and Communications at Broadway Utica. “By coming together as a community, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need and show our appreciation for the individuals who dedicate themselves to serving others.”

Three individuals will be chosen, and each will receive two tickets to the upcoming performance of COME FROM AWAY April 16. For more information about Beyond the Stage with Come From Away, visit Broadwayutica.org.

WHAT IS COME FROM AWAY ABOUT?
Come From Away is based on a true story of selflessness and compassion after the 9/11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center. The show opens in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001. The town contains an airport that was once a major transatlantic refueling stop, but no longer gets much air traffic — until 38 planes are rerouted there when the American airspace closes. In the week after 9/11, the town’s population doubled as its residents banded together to house, clothe, and feed 7,000 plane passengers from all over the world. Each member of the cast plays multiple characters — at least one Gander resident and one plane passenger each.

Each character is either a direct representation of a real person or a composite of several real people and Come From Away focuses on a select few people’s stories. Among the characters are the first-ever female captain of an American Airlines plane, the mayor of Gander, multiple schoolteachers, a couple both named Kevin, and a couple who meets on their displaced flight and bonds during their time in Gander and eventually married.
